26 Years of Living and What I Know So Far

As another year passes by and I can no longer refer to myself as a 26 year old, I find myself reflecting on the years I have lived and what this wonderful/crazy life has taught me so far. Self reflection is something I find to be a key factor in personal growth and I typically like to do this every 6-12 months (usually at the end and middle of the year), however I also find value in this when I am at the peak of crossing from one age to another. This time of reflection always leaves me with a feeling of appreciation for the lessons I have learnt from life and the growth I have experienced from learning them, which is why I have decided to break these lessons down to the ten that I have found the most freeing when I put them into use and accepted them within my life. I can only hope that by putting these into practice or adapting the idea of some of these lessons within your own life that you will gain the same sense of freedom and joy that I have come to experience.

  1. Life is a game

Life is literally a game and we are all choosing how we play it, whether this be intentionally or unintentionally. We move through the motions of day to day life encountering different experiences that either allow us to evolve into a better version of ourselves or leave us at the same level we are currently playing at, which is why living an intentional life of consistently seeking ways to learn and grow as an individual will lead you down a path of living a huge and rich life. I find that the more I look at life as a game the more I take joy in deciding how I would like to play it.

    2. Enjoy the process

While it is so important to have goals in life that we are working towards I cannot stress enough the importance of finding joy in the process of seeing our goals and desires unfolding before us. Something I have come to learn about a lot of people I have encountered (including myself at one point in time) is that we all at some stage in our lives take life way too seriously, which by doing so, zaps the fun out of life and takes away from what life is all about in the first place. Although the feeling of seeing what you set out to do finally being completed is one of the greatest feelings in life, if you are constantly looking into the future and purely only allowing yourself to enjoy the end result, once it is here you will look back and wonder where the last 6 months, 12 months, or even years have slipped away to. I can assure you that if you make a conscious effort to enjoy the little things that play such a big role in your life and goals all coming together how you desire you will live the most prosperous and joyful life on a consistent basis.

3. Everything always works out for the best

If you are anything like me or plenty of other people in the world, you would have at some point in your life had experiences where you feel like your world is falling apart and that the light at the end of the tunnel is nowhere to be seen. Am I right?

One of the biggest lessons life has taught me (although I am still guilty of falling into this old habit on occasions) is that in the end, these situations that seem like a mountain is towering over us with no possible way for us to get around it always moves aside and puts us back on our paths sooner or later. Whether you have experienced a relationship ending or losing a job, in time we usually look back and can be thankful for going through that experience because it has lead us to where we are in life and made us stronger.

4. You create your own life

One of the most exciting things I have come to learn about life is that the final outcome of our lives is completely in our hands.

“Life is always happening for us. Not to us.” – Tony Robbins

Each and every one of us has the power to choose the life we would like to live as well as the things we would like to have within it by the power of intentional creation, taking action to see the life we would like to have unfold before us, and allowing life to deliver to us that in which we seek.

5. Magic is everywhere

When I say life is full of magic I don’t mean in the form of spells and potions, but more so in the form of creation and the beautiful moments everyday life brings. How is it possible to live in a world that has such wonderful things and not believe in the power of magic? How is it possible that the creatures that dwell within this world have the ability to grow and bring new life into it? How is it possible that one day you will think of a person whom you have not seen or spoken to in years only to bump into them the following day?

This is what I believe to be magic.

6. Things are as you see them

One of the most simplest of lessons life has taught me that I spent many years of my life not understanding is that everything you see in life you choose how you see it and by simply changing the way you look at a situation you can completely shift your current way of feeling and thinking from negative to positive.

An example of this is lets say you are walking down the street one day and another person quickly walks past you banging into you as they pass by and do not stop to apologise and acknowledge what has just happened which leaves you feeling agitated and thinking to yourself how rude and disrespectful that person must be. A way you could look at and think about the situation is by thinking to yourself maybe that person has just had a phone call that something horrible has happened to a loved one and they are on their way to the hospital? Or, maybe that person is running late to a job interview after months of unemployment? Regardless of what the real reason is, chances are you will never see that person again and freeing yourself of the negative emotions tied to them is one of the kindest things you can do for yourself. This does not mean that you allow people to treat you poorly. It is important to have boundaries so it is also important to identify which things are worth letting go and which are worth addressing.

7. It is ok to put yourself first

As kind and loving as it is to do good for other people and I am not in any way encouraging you to stop being kind and loving to others,  I cannot stress enough that it is also one of the most important things in life to put yourself first sometimes. I have met so many people over the years and have been caught up in doing this myself in the past, where so much of their energy is spent helping those around them and always trying to please others that they become exhausted and unhappy.

There is no denying that the world needs kind and loving people but if you are trying to do this from an empty tank you are going to come to a stand still. Love yourself enough to take time to care for yourself as much as you care for others and don’t be afraid to say no sometimes. A tank that is consistently refuelled is far better than a tank that is trying to run on dry.

 8. Fear is only a set back

If we allow fear to rule our lives we are only holding ourselves back from living a life that is full and prosperous. Whether you are wanting to learn a new skill or take a leap towards your desired career, the time is now to let go of fear and move towards your desires. Our physical lives are too precious to be wasted worrying about the what ifs and taking life too seriously when the reality is that 90% percent of what we worry about doesn’t even happen. People have been known to live an entire life time only to reach the end with nothing but regret due to allowing fear to rule their choices. The more you practice conquering your fears the less fear you begin to feel, so cultivate the courage and take the leap towards your dreams.

9. Stop controlling the process

So you have made a decision on the sort of life you would like to live and its a big one, you start taking steps towards it, however in the process of doing so have started to dictate how every little detail must plan out and you struggle to see the benefits of all your hard work. Its disheartening isn’t it? One of the biggest things life has taught me is that it is so important to set goals and a clear picture of what life you would like and take actions towards then, but it is also just as important to allow the universe to do some of the work.

An example of this is lets say you have made the decision that you are going to start a YouTube channel and you would like to see yourself have 200,000 subscribers. You start to take the first steps of creating your YouTube and making videos. The best thing you can do at this point is let go of how your subscribers will come to you and allow the universe to guide this step. Simply remain consistent with sharing what you love to do, continue to develop your skills, and the rest will fall into place in time. It’s too exhausting trying to figure out every little detail so you may as well let go a little bit and allow the universe to take the reigns in some areas.

“As far as I can tell it Is about telling the universe what you want and letting go of how it comes to pass.” – Jim Carrey

10. Authenticity is worth millions

The world is full of successful people living out their dreams and inspiring millions around the globe. What is it that these people all have in common? It is that they are authentic. Their uniqueness is what makes them stand out from the rest of the world and they are not afraid of being themselves. This is something I feel we should all feel confident in doing. Being unapologetically ourselves.

Doing what you love to do and allowing yourself to be who you choose to be without the fear of the opinions of others is truly worth so much in the world. It will allow you reach incredible heights and give others the confidence to be their authentic self also. The world needs more of this.
